A new community defibrillator has been installed at 9 Chestnut Way, Newton Aycliffe, DL5 7AW, thanks to the efforts of the local community and MISSEDABEAT. Charlotte Leonard, the mother of junior runner Leo, has taken on the role of guardian, ensuring regular checks and maintenance are completed.

Leo, who plays football for Newton Aycliffe Juniors FC U9 Reds team, had originally planned with his family to install a defibrillator at their home using the funds raised by Great North runners Andrew Dixon, Nick Herbert, and himself. However, Leo expressed concern that his football team might need one more urgently.

After sharing his feelings with his parents, they reached out to Mark from MISSEDABEAT, and in response to Leo’s thoughtful request, the decision was made to donate a portable defibrillator to his football team while still moving forward with installing a community defibrillator at his home.
In a special unveiling ceremony, Andrew, Nick, and Leo proudly presented the new community defibrillator. Their efforts reflect the ongoing mission of MISSEDABEAT to ensure that defibrillators are available in communities to save lives in emergency situations.
Ben Simpson, who suffered a cardiac arrest on Monday, 29th January 2024, while on the field, is another key part of this story. Thanks to the swift action of his teammates and officials, CPR and defibrillation saved his life. After months of resilience and recovery, Ben has made an impressive comeback and recently launched his own electrical business, Sparkwise Solutions.
Inspired by his experience, Ben installed a defibrillator at his former employer’s factory and has since become a passionate supporter of MISSEDABEAT.

His mission is now to advocate for more defibrillators across the country, ensuring others have access to life-saving equipment.
This heartwarming story, driven by the actions of individuals like Leo, Charlotte Leonard, the Great North runners, and Ben Simpson, showcases the incredible impact a community can have in making life-saving resources more accessible and protecting lives for the future.

MISSEDABEAT is actively seeking runners and super fundraisers to join their team and help the charity continue to grow. They are aiming to have 20-30 participants in the Junior Great North Run next year, along with 15-20 runners in the main race. If you’re interested in making a positive impact in the community, this is a fantastic opportunity to get involved and contribute to a great cause.
