A Lasting Tribute at Mitsubishi Chemical ❤️⚡
Mitsubishi Chemical are extremely proud to now have a public access defibrillator installed outside their premises on Horndale Avenue, Newton Aycliffe.
This life-saving device stands as a heartfelt tribute to their much-loved colleague Paul Richards, who sadly passed away suddenly in June 2023 due to an undetected heart condition.

Determined to honour Paul’s memory, colleagues Jackie Brown and John Allen (pictured with Mark from MISSEDABEAT) led meaningful fundraising efforts, including a springtime cake sale that raised £450. In September, fellow employee Nick Herbert completed the Great North Run in Paul’s memory—raising an incredible £822. A total of £1,272 was donated to MISSEDABEAT.
While the total cost of the defibrillator, cabinet, and installation was higher, MISSEDABEAT ensured that the additional funds were raised to make this fitting tribute possible. The project wasn’t without its challenges—but Jackie, John, and Mark remained in regular communication and showed great determination to see it through, even when the process was testing at times. Their perseverance reflects the strength of feeling behind this tribute and the importance of making a difference.
In addition, a second defibrillator was installed near Nick’s home—achieved thanks to the combined efforts of our amazing Great North Run team, including Nick himself and our youngest-ever fundraiser, Leo Leonard. Leo’s passion for helping others inspired his parents to take on the role of guardians for the defibrillator now installed at their home, just around the corner from Nick’s.
At Mitsubishi Chemical, John Allen has also taken on the guardian role and will carry out weekly checks on the defibrillator. A bleed control kit will be added to the cabinet in the coming weeks.
MISSEDABEAT is incredibly grateful to the employees of Mitsubishi Chemical, Nick’s family and friends, and the Leonard family for their support. And the momentum continues—this year, we’re proud to have 20 runners in the Great North Run and are hopeful of welcoming 25 junior runners too! The team is growing, and together, we’re making a real difference.
